Choosing A Great Domain Name

You need to really think about the domain name of your website. It can affect how easy it is to communicate to people verbally, and also has an affect on how well you rank in search engine results. And you should be careful who your domain registrar is, and be sure that your domain is registered in your name and not owned by someone else.

You will want to register a few domains, with preferably ".com" as the extension:

  • your business name - sample: johnjonesplumbing.com
  • your personal name - sample: johnjones.com
  • your geo-market area and industry - sample: plumberorlandoflorida.com or orlandofloridaplumber.com - these types of domain names are based on what your prospects would likely type in to a search engine to find your type of business in your city or town
  • if the ".com" version of your name is already taken, you can also try using hyphens between the words - sample: plumber-orlando-florida.com
  • if you are still having trouble finding an available domain name, try using other extensions such as: .net  .us  .biz  .org  .info  (but try to get the .com if at all possible)
  • we do recommend to purchase your domains for a minimum of two years, search engines do look at such things in deciding rankings, etc.

Please note: SBSC Members and Gold Members get a free domain name consultation via email to come up with ideas and to answer questions on choosing domain names.
